Conditions of employment for Health Workers - Medicine Policy

Health care workers must never dispense, administer or prompt the taking of medicines except where directly supervised by a Registered nurse in accordance with the policy of the establishment where they are working.

You should note that homeopathic and other herbal substances, as well as non-prescription medicines, fall within the scope of this policy.

If you are asked to do something or carry out a procedure which you are unhappy with, discuss this with the person in charge or your Manager.

The following tasks:

  • Peg feeding

  • Blood sugar monitoring

may not be undertaken without specialist training and continual supervision by a Qualified Nurse.

If you are to be placed into a Domiciliary Care setting you will be inducted to the medication policy for domiciliary care workers.
